Brazil (also known as Republica Federtiva do Brasil) ranks number five, as the largest and most densely populated country in the world. Brazil was founded by the Portuguese in the 15th century and remains the only Portuguese speaking nation in South America. It has a population of roughly 200 million. The coastline of Brazil spans over 7,367 kilometers and borders the Atlantic Ocean. The country’s rapidly growing economy is ranked eighth largest in the world. Although agriculture is a relatively small component of the economy, Ethanol production is a significant product of the sugar industry. The Amazon Rainforest, located in Brazil, is the world’s largest rainforest and covers an area of 2.3 million square miles. In 2014, Brazil will be host to the World Cup. It is home to the only soccer team that has won the World Cup five times. Brazil will also host the 2016 Olympic Games in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Christ the Redeemer, the 130-feet tall statue that overlooks Rio de Janeiro, is one of the seven wonders of contemporary times, and an icon of Brazil.
